Position Description Summary

This position is responsible for organizing and documenting datasets available through the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information & Data Cooperative (GRIIDC) data management system.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Physical Oceanography, Environmental Science, Geographic Information Systems, or related field of study.

Four (4) years of related experience.

Additional education may be considered as a substitution for the minimum experience requirements.

Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and programming in MatLab or Python.

Experience with shell scripting in Linux and/or Windows. Working knowledge of XML. Ability to hash and checksum data files.

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively in a courteous and professional manner with diverse population of customers in person, telephone, or e-mail.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Physical Oceanography, Environmental Science, Geographic Information Systems, or related field of study.

One (1) year of scientific data management in physical oceanography.

Experience managing physical oceanography or environmental data.

Job Duties

Job Duties

Document datasets using standard ISO 19115-2 metadata of contents of datasets. Transform data file format from proprietary or binary file types to non-proprietary, archive-ready file formats. Organize data into required directory structure. Perform file hashing to verify integrity of dataset files before and after transfer to NCEI.

Job Duties

Review datasets submitted to the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information & Data Cooperative data management system to ensure completeness and file integrity and contact data providers, to request additional information to complete datasets.

Job Duties

Communicate with NOAA’s NCEI scientific data stewards to get feedback and input on data directory structure and data organization prior to file transfer. Respond to inquiries from NOAA’s NCEI data stewards and address issues with datasets in a timely manner.

Job Duties

Provide insight and direction on data and metadata standards and data best practices to the GRIIDC Technical Coordinator, Program Manager, and Director during meetings and through technical reports.

Job Duties

Work with GRIIDC team members to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of products and services including supporting the GRIIDC Director and Program Manager with the execution of GRIIDC tasks.

Job Duties

Document and maintain a dataset inventory of Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information & Data Cooperative datasets that meet the requirements for submission to NOAA’s NCEI.

Job Duties

Participate in GRIIDC weekly team meetings, data package review meetings, and other meetings, as needed.

Job Duties

Provide input on the development of the GRIIDC data management system software, through participation in software development meetings and testing sessions, as needed.
